Once everyone was safely in the house, Pepper said, “I’m going to take the first watch with TJ and John. Everyone else needs to make sure their gear is cleaned and repacked before they do anything else. If we need to leave here, we should be able to pick up what we need and leave immediately. Clean and fill water bottles. Repack your emergency food. I’ll help TJ get everything ready when I’m relieved, and Tiffany will organise stuff for Phoebe. Shanice, could you organise a roster for keeping watch. Kenya needs to get some basic skills in keeping watch for when we get in trouble, so please put her with you or Paul at least once.

“Tiffany, once Phoebe’s asleep, I need a full inventory of everything in the house. I know people are tired and if you need to sleep, then do so as long as you aren’t on watch. John, when you’re relieved, bring mattresses from the rooms and set them up down here. Despite the size of the house, it’ll be best if we stay together in case we are invaded or attacked. We need to get blankets and make blackout curtains for the windows. Once night falls, I don’t want any light to escape the house from lights, torches or candles. Paul, do you have anything to add?”

“Yes, if you need to leave this central living room for any reason, even a bathroom break, then let people know where you are going. My kids, TJ and Phoebe, are not to leave the room without one of the others. John, I know you are as old as Tiffany and Pepper but until we get your knife or bow skills upgraded, I’d rather you had someone with you. Keep your weapons close, even if you go to the bathroom. If you see a rat, a mouse, or any animal, then evade it and get back here or kill it. Don’t forget, a rat can squeeze through a hole smaller than an inch in diameter.”

Pepper said, “Thank you, Paul. OK, let’s get things organised.”

As everyone moved away, Pepper said, “TJ, you and John come with me.”

Once they away from the others, Pepper said, “John, find a place upstairs where you can see the main approach from the river. You need to be in the dark and make sure the light from outside isn’t reflecting off you in any way. Stay awake and focussed. When TJ and I have checked the house, we’ll join you and split the area being watched.”

John nodded and moved off. TJ said, “What do we do?”

“We have to check every room and make sure the windows are shut and the doors closed. We want to make sure there are no holes for the monsters to get inside. I bet you have really good eyes and you’ll see some things I won’t.”

Pepper put out her hand, and TJ grabbed hold, then they walked through the house checking every room, door, window and cupboard. When they were
